Spring 2008: New York Yankees vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

Before tonight's game, the Yankees announced a $1 million contribution to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. They also committed to playing an exhibition on or near the Virginia Tech campus sometime during 2008. The HokieSports.com front page is currently billing this as "Spring, 2008."

Hate to burst your bubble, brother, but it doesn't say the Yankees will play Tech. It just says the NYY will play an exhibition game on or near Tech's campus.

The HokieSports.com page displays it as "Yankess vs Hokies", so I am hopeful it will be that.

It wouldn't be a crazy match-up, either. Remember, this could be an early preseason exhibition game for the Yankees. At that time, their roster is full of AA and AAA level players who they want to scout for promotion in the system. I think the Hokies would be competitive in a game against minor league players, especially if the Hokies get to keep "college rule" (aka aluminum) bats while the Yanks use wood. And the Yankees "stars" could start the game and take one run through the lineup (probably in one inning) before being subbed out.

I think it's possible, though, that the game would be played in Salem, VA. It's got a nice minor league park with a listed capacity of 6,300. English Field's listed capacity is 1,500. As this would probably be a fundraising event, that's a big difference.

I hope so, too. That would be amazing.

I didn't say I think Tech would be overmatched. I agree with you - I think the Hokies could hold their own.
