I'm accustomed to ESPN using Virginia Tech for promotion, but not Coca-Cola. But during a commerical break in a men's college basketball game today, I saw the following ad for the first time. Had I seen this in Virginia, I would have assumed it was simply a local ad placement. But this was during an Ohio State-Wisconsin game.

A quick search later, and I found it on YouTube. So much for having to get it off of a TiVo myself! The ad itself is somewhat fitting, because the Hokie men's basketball team has been down for the last 10 years but is having an amazing season this year! They won their 20th game last night, and now seem to be "a lock" for the NCAA tournament, which VT hasn't made since 1996.

According to Virginia Tech, the person featured is a Tech alum who "discovered" this superstition while a student. The commercial is an "edited interview" of him explaining his supersistion. There are two other ads in the series, featuring Notre Dame and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Oh, by the way, VT is 2-0 vs UNC this year. VT doesn't play Notre Dame this year - good thing for Notre Dame!
